Autumn in Central Portugal: why September–October is the quietest (and best) time to visit
Everyone fights for July and August — but the people who know Central Portugal book September and October. The Atlantic is at its warmest of the year, the beaches empty out, the forests turn gold and the UNESCO monuments lose their queues. Here is the case for autumn, from our base near Pombal.
September: summer without the crowds
In September, daytime temperatures in the Pombal region still reach 25–28 °C — and the ocean, which has absorbed heat all summer, is at its annual maximum. That is autumn’s favourite paradox: the water is warmer in September than in July, yet the beaches are half empty. Osso da Baleia, Pedrógão, Praia do Urso or the river beaches of the Zêzere are all within 35–50 minutes of the house — with parking, space and peace.
October: golden forests and harvest time
October is the most photogenic month of the year in Central Portugal. The Mata Nacional do Buçaco, an hour away, turns russet, ochre and bronze — the finest autumn forest in the country (see our dedicated guide: Bussaco Forest & Luso day trip). Days stay mild (20–23 °C), evenings turn crisp — perfect walking weather.
October is also harvest season: grapes, olives and chestnuts. Estates around Pombal open their doors, markets fill with figs and the first new wine, and the region’s kitchens — covered in our guide to the best restaurants in Pombal — reach their annual peak.
Monuments without the queues
Tomar and the Convento de Cristo (40 min), Leiria Castle (35 min), Batalha and Alcobaça (48 min–1h), Coimbra (50 min): in autumn these sites return to their natural rhythm. No coach parties, no 40-minute lines — just the patrimony, the light and the time to look. The 2026 “New 7 Wonders of Portugal” campaign has put Leiria Castle and the Convento de Cristo among the regional finalists, which makes this the perfect moment to see them before the crowds find them again.
The pool stays open
Contrary to what you might expect, the swimming pool at Casa dos Duques remains perfectly usable through September and much of October — the water, warmed by weeks of sun, is often more pleasant than in June. Kids who haven’t swum since August get one last season in the garden, and the garden stays green well into November.
Practical tips for the autumn
- Clothing — summer clothes by day, a jacket or fleece for the evenings (12–15 °C after sunset).
- Booking — September is increasingly requested by savvy travellers; book early for the best dates.
